On October 18-19, 2023, in Valencia, Spain, the 4th Meeting of the Union for the Mediterranean's Directors-General for Civil Protection took place. This meeting was held in response to the Ministerial Declaration of the 5th UfM Regional Forum from November 27, 2020, which emphasized the significant role of the UfM Platform on Civil Protection in addressing common challenges and developing concrete actions within the framework of the Action Plan for a Euro-Mediterranean Civil Protection focused on prevention campaigns, emergency response, and crisis management.
With the support of the Spanish Presidency of the Council of the European Union and DG ECHO, this meeting aimed to promote a more agile, resilient, and collaborative approach to governance across Euro-Mediterranean civil protection systems.
The gathering brought together Civil Protection Directors-General and various stakeholders to present the outcomes of the Regional Dialogue Platform on Civil Protection initiated in December 2022. It also aimed to validate the 2030 UfM Action Plan on Civil Protection, setting the stage for effective on-the-ground actions within a Mediterranean Framework on Civil Protection.
The deliberations and discussions from this meeting played a pivotal role in shaping a more resilient Euro-Mediterranean region, better prepared to confront both current challenges and those that may arise in the future.
This meeting was held in coordination with the 51st Meeting of the Directors General of the EU Civil Protection Mechanism (UCPM). As a result, the morning of October 18th featured a joint plenary session involving the Civil Protection Directors-General of the European Union Member States and participating States of the European Union Civil Protection Mechanism, focusing on sharing cross-cutting Euro-Mediterranean experiences.
